Canvas you can wipe.
Suede you cannot.
You cannot make suede durable. This guide is about slowing down what you cannot stop, so the piece you bought because you love it stays the piece you love for as long as possible.
The mark sits on a sealed film. A damp cloth lifts it and the finish is unchanged.
The mark soaks into the nap. Wiping drives it deeper and flattens the fibers. You trade a stain for a shiny patch.
Every material has care guidance. Except this one.
Louis Vuitton publishes material-by-material care instructions on its own site. Suede is not on it. Then we asked a client advisor directly.

Four ways the surface changes, none of them reversible at home.
Suede is the underside of the hide, buffed into a nap of open fibers. There is no finish layer. Whatever reaches the fibers stays with them.
HANDLING
The nap shifts
One pass of a fingertip changes the shade. Repeated contact flattens the fibers into a smooth, darker patch that reads as wear from across a room.
WATER
Rings and tide lines
Drops are absorbed, not shed. As they dry they carry dirt to the edge of the wet area and leave a ring. Beige shows it first.
OILS
Permanent darkening
Hand oils, lotion, makeup and food oils bond to the fiber. Oil is the one mark a brush and eraser will not lift.
ABRASION
Bald corners
Corners, the base and the strap channel rub against everything. On coated canvas that is a scuff. On suede the nap wears through.
What we do with ours.
Nothing here is sanctioned by Louis Vuitton. Everything here is what experienced suede owners do anyway. Where a step carries a real trade-off, we say so.
Before first carry
- ●Decide on protectant now, not after the first mark. It only works on clean, unmarked nap.
- ●Test on the base or inside a seam allowance first and let it dry fully. Protectant can shade tan suede a half-step darker.
- ●Two light coats from arm’s length, not one heavy one. Twenty-four hours to cure.
- ●Photograph the piece in daylight. That is your day-one record.
Every carry
- ●Carry by the leather wherever the piece gives you leather. On the suede Speedy, handles, trim and strap are all calfskin, and the house designed it that way. Keep hands off the nap.
- ●No lotion or sanitizer within a few minutes of picking it up.
- ●Brush with a soft suede brush after wear, one direction, to lift the nap and shed surface dust.
- ●Keep it off the floor and away from denim. Indigo transfers.
If it gets wet
- ●Blot, never rub. A clean white cloth, pressed, not dragged.
- ●Let it dry at room temperature, stuffed to shape. No hair dryer, no radiator, no sun.
- ●Once dry, brush the whole panel in one direction. A partial brush leaves a visible boundary.
- ●Dry dirt marks: suede eraser, gentle pressure, then brush. Oil: stop. That is a professional job.
Storage
- ●Stuffed with a satin or plain undyed cotton bag pillow sized to your model. Firm enough to hold the shape, never straining the seams.
- ●Upright, in its dust bag, on a shelf. Not stacked, not hanging by the strap.
- ●Away from heat, light and anything dyed.
- ●No plastic against the nap. Ever.
The mistakes that turn a mark into damage.
Most suede damage is not the stain. It is what someone did to the stain in the first ten minutes.
- Wipe itWiping drives the mark into the fibers and crushes the nap. The stain stays and now it is shiny.
- Wet-clean itWater and soap on suede leave tide lines larger than the original mark. This is the most common irreversible mistake.
- Use leather productsConditioners, creams and lotions are designed for finished leather. On suede they soak in, darken and stiffen the nap.
- Use silicone spraysHousehold waterproofers are often silicone based. They seal the fibers, dry the hide and cannot be removed.
- Home remediesVinegar, baking soda, alcohol, hand sanitizer. Louis Vuitton warns against all of them on every material it covers. Suede is the least forgiving of any.
- Wait on oilOil sets as it oxidizes. A professional suede cleaner has a chance in the first days and almost none after weeks.

Water-based, sponge applied, no aerosol. Widely recommended by shoe-care professionals; more shade shift risk on beige, so test with care.

What cannot be undone
Flattened nap, water rings and oil are permanent at home and expensive at a professional. Every one of them is a resale grade.

It changes how long a piece stays in the grade it was bought in, and on suede that is the whole difference between a Very Good listing and a Fair one.
